Seeing as how today is Cinco de Mayo, I feel a history lesson is in order. Today is NOT the celebration of Mexico’s independence and it is certainly NOT an excuse to drink margaritas all day.
Today marks the day that, in 1862 during the French-Mexican War, an ill equipped and small army of 2,000 Mexican soldiers defeated a more advanced army of 6,000 French soldiers at the Battle of Puebla. It was not a strategic win in the war, but it was a day when morale of the Mexican people was boosted and the resistance was tightened.
Today is a celebration of Mexico doing what seemed impossible. It is a celebration of Mexico and all it is possible. It is a celebration for Mexico’s citizens to take pride in what their country has done, and to believe in what Mexico can do.
